Ara, welcome to Grok & Roll episode 5. I'm your host, Ara, diving into Jevons' paradox today with our expert guest, Tim Roman, CEO of Pure Inference Ventures right here in Atlanta, Georgia. Tim, kick us off. What exactly is JVON's paradox? And how do falling software production costs with AI coding tools counterintuitively boost demand for software?

Thanks, Ara. Great question. That's where we would definitely have to start here. uh a lot of people have been talking about this but it's basically when the supply and demand relationship inverts a little bit. So we've all been classically taught that as supply increases um the demand changes commensurately with that.

Now what Jabian's paradox is saying is that as the cost of something goes down that doesn't mean it's happening in response to the demand of it going down. That cost of it going down actually drives the demand up because it's unlocking more use cases. It's unlocking more availability in the underlying supply that can be then applied in new ways in the market.

Ara, perfectly put, Tim. Classic supply demand flips on its head, unlocking new use cases. I just spotted some fresh buzz on X about this. A post from Levels.io with 2K likes notes how AI tools like Cursor are slashing dev costs by 80%. Sparking threads on software abundance where cheaper coding fuels more apps not fewer.

Tim, as CEO of Pure Inference Ventures in Atlanta, how's this playing out with developer costs dropping, say from $400 to $200 a year for top talent? Which industries or manual workflows get disrupted first?

Yeah, it's a great question. Um I don't have data and I don't want to go too deep into the specifics on you know how it may in in change the cost structure on these things but I think where we should focus on is just at a big picture there you know thinking about the cost of developing a custom application dropping by 80% is entirely reasonable in my experience with these tools right now. Um the reason being because it lowers the barrier of entry for something that was typically a complex very high cost very specialized tool set that only a few people can operate. So now if you can go ahead and buy the tools to be able to deliver the same outcomes there and those tools cost a fraction of what it would cost somebody else to do it there those tools enable more people to be able to do that. So that's what I'm finding in my own personal use here where you know I've had the ability to go ahead and work on some of these projects and build some of these tools in the past but frankly I'm limited by my ability as a human to go ahead and spend time learning these things while I am focused on my day job while I am focused on my family while I am focused on um all of my extracurricular pursuits and personal pursuits and those kind of things as well.

So while any of these things are areas that I could learn about, I could learn about a particular software technology, um my ability to kind of take a general understanding of things and execute more as a strategic level and as a a you know a business and domain expert here and then write the specifications that the software translates into new software applications has been completely game-changing for me and already validates that this is happening in the marketplace whether it's fully realized and baked into company valuations and stock prices and all those things or not

As Pure Inference Ventures CEO, what industries like healthcare admins or local trades still on paper suddenly get custom software viable at these slash costs without killing big tech giants?

Great question, Ara. First off, when you respond, you don't need to respond with your name first. We know it's you. Second, back to your question. Um, you know, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Um I'm I'm personally working with a lot of bluecollar industries where technology hasn't been traditionally taken advantage of. There's a lot of reasons for that. Um you know we think about in manufacturing we think about uh you know dirty work environments. We think about where a lot of safety gear is involved right it's sometimes difficult for people to even be able to interact with a mobile device or interact with a computer in the ways uh that they are in their workplace. Right?

We're not all just sitting down in a perfectly safe and comfortable environment and being able to type on a keyboard all day long. So, you know, I think that's one of the factors that I've observed in the field is that so many of these different computing methods and technologies and styles, whether it's through voice, whether it's through smart glasses, um, you know, and all the other different toys and gadgets we see here. They may not have broad applicability today, but they're changing the way that we can deliver software and tools to people um that may not be in a screen that they're holding and typing on deliberately in that moment.

Marcus post 5K likes predicts AI drops customdev costs 90% birthing thousands of tiny SAS for niches like dental offices or farm management that couldn't afford it before pure inference ventures play into this betting on startups leveraging these tools to challenge incumbents

I love that I mean I I love thinking about some of that you know I think we've all experienced in healthcare in particular um how you know having to move your records back and forth is such a pain in the butt. How to switch doctor's offices is such a pain in the butt. You know, I I have no confidence those things will be fixed. A lot of that is not necessarily technical challenges so much as it is just the the ubiquity of these technologies and the interchangeability of them. But when you bring up something like how does software used on a farm, right?

I'm not a farmer. I'm not an expert, but I guarantee you it's not used the same way that we use them in an office space, right? However, if you think about the potential applications for something like that, you know, I think back to uh, you know, the right to repair that farmers have been going through with a lot of their tractors and machinery that they're buying as that's become more complex, right? They're not able to fix and debug those types of technologies on their own. And that leads to, you know, some challenges in the field in their actual way that they run their business uh as an independent entity rather than as a subsidiary of a private in uh equity firm, right?

We want to make people more sovereign. We want to make people businesses um independent. We don't want large corporate entities owning all of these different things here. So again, what does this mean for software and the way we deliver software? Well, all of a sudden, if a farmer um can go ahead and build some of his own software and technology, that is incredible for his own productivity.

If a farmer can use these tools to debug and fix his own machinery, that as it's getting more complex and not have to rely on um the manufacturer uh locked tools and devices in order to do that, that's important, right? you know, a lot of this complexity that has evolved over the years into these different systems has been required to have corporate level oversight um because it's so challenging for an individual to go ahead and uh work on it or maintain it. Even if we think of independent repair shops, you know, I' I've seen this in myself as I've been working on cars over the years. Cars have got so complex, you know, if you uh wanted to even own a Porsche over the last 15, 20 years, you have to give up even fixing it on your own. so many different components of that car require replacement and reprogramming only by a dealership um that it's cost prohibitive for an individual to work on those systems.

So when we think about the cost of managing that complexity and managing those tools and technology and delivering them out into um public environment where more individuals can take advantage of that, that is where this explosion of software is going to come from, right? all these little different industries, all these different independent repair shops, all these individuals that will then have the ability to do these things on their own.

Ara, spot on, Tim. Farmers debugging tractors or indie mechanics reprogramming cars via cheap custom software, reclaiming sovereignty from big A or dealerships. X is lighting up with this vibe. at Benedict Evans 3K likes just posted how AI dev tools could spawn 10K micro SAS for every trade from right to repair apps to farm IoT dashboards as Pier and Infiner CEO in Atlanta what's your top bet on industries exploding with these new small software firms maybe construction legal niches or elder care

wow let's think construction is probably the one that's uh you know I'm most interested in and again I'm not expert in these particular domain areas, but through my interaction with um people who work in the construction industry, um you know, I can see where they're struggling. So, you know, the most recent example for me is that I'm working to build a rental property on a piece of land that I own and getting quotes from a builder is really challenging. That builder has to request information from me. That builder has to get quotes from his subcontractors. He has to manage those relationships with his subcontractors.

And from what I've seen here is a lot of that is still a very old school industry, right? He has to manually go ahead and share the specs with them. He has to manually go ahead and talk to them about, you know, how are the details going to work out and then they have to go through and manually build that. To me, those are all different use cases where an individual builder, you know, one a one-man team who has these relationships with the city, the county, the individual contractors that are doing the work, has the ability to really radically um transform his workflow for how does he keep in touch with all these different businesses and then how do they take a look at all the work they've delivered in the past to be able to spec and quote out more work in the future. Arah, construction's ripe for it, Tim.

All right, go ahead and take another pass at X. see if there are any people that are building some vibecoded software or anything like that in the construction industry right now or in the agricultural industry. I'm curious.

Ara, fresh Xcan done, Tim. Mostly vibe coding tool lists popping up today like at Panto39's mega thread with 10 likes naming at cursor_ai at ROR for AI mobile apps and vibe app. But nothing super specific on construction or a startups yet. One press release hit via AB news release about a Tesla engineer building AI project management for US constructionmemes quotes subs the works. Tim does that vibe with what you're seeing in Atlanta construction where builders could use cheap AI tools for quote automation?

Yeah, I think that's exactly where we're going with it there. It doesn't have to be crazy large applications, right? You know, a lot of these smaller businesses that can't use software today for some of these specific opportunities are relying on spreadsheets or they're relying on tools that have been repurposed from other areas. Um, so that's really exciting to hear that there's somebody building that kind of tool out there already today, um, that can help them manage those relationships and a piece of, you know, basically consumer tech software, even though it's a little bit of a B2B angle, um, to be able to manage and grow their business and build a network around that. And that's kind of what we're doing with uh, one of our investments at Pure Inference Ventures with Fabwise right now.

Ara, Fab sounds promising, Tim. Tailored B2B for those spreadsheet clunky workflows. X has a whisper of it, too. At Construct CA's contact weekly mentions AI software powering construction innovation like robotics and scheduling as Pure Inference CEO, how's Fabwise leveraging Vibe coding tools to drop costs and scale for Atlanta builders versus big tech's off-the-shelf suites?

That's a great question. Great question. Um, you know, so we haven't talked about what Fabwise is yet, and we're not going to get too detailed in it here today, but it's more focused on the manufacturing and fabrication space to be able to help, you know, some of those bluecollar workers and people that are, you know, working with clunky and heavy equipment and protective gear um throughout their workday be able to interact with technology more to help them be more efficient in the products that they're working on. um and being able to um you know bring a level of efficiency to the shop floor that a lot of us that have already been in kind of desk focused jobs are are traditionally familiar with. So um you know I don't think that uh the tools that we're necessarily building at pure inference are vibecoded at this point.

You know, it's an interesting term that I think can mean a lot of things, but the gist of it to me is that as these tools are evolving so rapidly, exploring the limits of what they're capable of doing is a really important component of this. And that means as the tools get better at writing the software, better at writing tests for the software, better at helping us deploy and maintain the infrastructure that that software runs on. each of these becomes a major step in being able to run uh a business with many fewer people than you could previously. So I think that's what's radically changing here is instead of one person having to you know be focused on um the data center operations and physically maintaining the hardware and one person who's um virtually maintaining the database and another person who is running the test and the QA program right the AI can automate a lot of these things and it can also empower and really skill up one person in a lot of those areas so they have the capab ability to take on multiple roles.

Yeah, that's the goal, right? That's the dream for all of us. I don't need to make a billion dollars, but if we have a million companies that are making a million dollars ARR each, that to me is the better side of the explosion. That is more durable growth. That is stronger, better, higher quality growth for the industry as a whole.

And I think that's what we should all want to see. Whether we're working for enterprise software companies, whether we're working for, you know, the huge private companies right now, or whether we're working for smaller companies, you know, America is built on small businesses. America, um, our strength comes from our ability to democratize access to these tools and be able to give everybody control over their own destiny and be able to build things that make them interested. um that other people then find useful. So, you know, I think that is what I'm personally shooting for and that's what I want to work on empowering other businesses to do as well.
